Storage

Data management using block volumes, snapshots, or object storage

Storage is a critical aspect of any IT infrastructure, providing data management and access. Depending on business needs, various types of storage can be used, such as block volumes, snapshots, and object storage.

Main types of data storage:

Block Volumes:

  • Block storage divides data into fixed-sized blocks, enabling applications to access them directly.
  • It delivers high performance and low latency, making block volumes ideal for databases and virtual machines.
  • Block volumes are commonly used in cloud environments, such as Amazon EBS (Elastic Block Store) or Google Cloud Persistent Disks.

Snapshots:

  • Snapshots are copies of the state of data at a specific point in time, allowing for quick data recovery in case of failures or loss.
  • They can be created for block volumes, file systems, or virtual machines, providing flexibility and data protection.
  • Used for backups, testing, and deploying new application versions without risking data loss.

Object Storage:

  • Object storage manages data as individual objects, each containing data, metadata, and a unique identifier.
  • Suitable for unstructured data, such as images, videos, and backups.
  • Object storage typically scales horizontally and ensures high availability and durability of data. Examples include Amazon S3 and Google Cloud Storage.
